【故事】

 李康生出色的處女作很明顯與他的人生導師蔡明亮的電影有著相似之處，但電影【不見】擁有屬於它自己的細膩情感及節奏韻律。

 毫不相干的兩個人，一名孩童與一名老人在同一天失蹤了。孩童的失蹤馬上被察覺了，老人的不見卻是在數個小時後才被察覺到。我們分別跟隨著兩位失蹤人物的照顧者──孩童的外婆與老人的孫子，看外婆不顧一切的尋找孩童時，老人的孫子卻浪費時間在虛擬世界的戰爭遊戲。

 故事的背景，人們正被SARS般的病毒侵害，然而在故事以外真實世界的某個地方，一場真正的戰爭正在奪走許多人民的性命。

 外婆發瘋似的尋求生死兩界幫忙尋找孩童，兩者卻都愛莫能助。而老人的孫子（如同一般孩童般倔強而自足）並不尋求任何人的幫忙，但他亦同樣的迷失在原地打轉。

 經過了這一天，由這些混亂的片斷經驗，在我們心底浮現一幅無法治癒的現代文明病景像。這部電影如同水晶般清晰與美麗。

【Synopsis】
  Lee Kang-Sheng's remarkable debut feature has an obvious family likeness with the films of his mentor Tsai Ming-Liang, but its sensibility and rhythms are all its own. Two unrelated people go missing the same day, an infant and a pensioner. One disappearance is noticed almost immediately, the other not until hours later. We follow the missing people's carers -- a grandma and a grandson, respectively -- as one searches for the missing child with increasing desperation and the other squanders his day on virtual-reality war games.

In the background, other people are going down with a SARS-like virus; off-screen somewhere, a real war is raging and filling body-bags.

The grandma calls on both the living and the dead for help in her frantic search, but neither can give her what she needs. The grandson (tough and self-sufficient, as kids are) asks for no-one's help in his search, but he goes round in circles too. Across this one day, through these fragments of dislocated experience, we get a picture of a contemporary malaise which no antibiotic can cure. The picture is crystal-clear, and very beautiful.

導演自傳
1991年在台北街頭被蔡明亮發掘，從此成為蔡氏電影不可缺的大將。有人說蔡明亮的電影就是李康生的臉。他以「愛情萬歲」勇奪南特影展最佳男演員獎，「你那邊幾點」又贏了馬尼拉國際影展的最佳男主角。

「不見」是他當了十二年演員之後，自編自導的第一部電影，目前他正積極準備他的第二部電影「Help Me」。

Director Biography

Discovered in the streets of Taipei by Tsai Ming-Liang in 1991,
Lee Kang-Sheng became the right-hand man that Tsai's films can't
do without.  Some say that the film of Tsai Ming-Liang is the
face of Lee Kang-Sheng.  He won the best male actor award of the
Nante Film Festival for his performance in Vive L'amour.  He again
won the best male actor award of the Manila International Film
Festival for his performance in What Time is it There?

The Missing is his debut feature film as a writer/director after
12 years of acting.  Currently, he is eagerly preparing for his
second film, Help Me.

《不見》 導演的話

 我父親因久病輕生，他往生後兩年，哥哥的小孩出世，我母親一直懷疑小孩是父親轉世投胎。為了照顧她的第一個孫子，她提前辦了退休，我們一家人也因為這個可愛的小生命逐漸走出父親死亡的陰霾…

 有一天，母親帶小孩去公園溜滑梯，小孩跌一跤在額頭上摔了個大包，母親臉色發白，說她好害怕哥哥會責怪他，又有一次，她不小心給小孩喝了過期的牛奶，也是嚇得整晚不能睡，我從來沒見過她那麼倉惶失措………

我常常在想，如果我的小姪兒在公園走失了，母親會怎麼辦？我又想，如果小朋友早出生兩年，我父親也許就不會輕易地放棄他受苦的生命，甚至病也好了，帶著他的小孫子到公園去玩…………我也不會那麼早就失去他………..

 去年，我在電視上看到一則新聞；某社區的巷子裡發現一堆被丟棄發臭的早餐盒，經過偵查，原來是一個小學生，他把爺爺每天為他準備的早餐在出門後便隨手扔了，然後跑去買麥當勞，爺爺知道後非常傷心…………

我決定要拍一個有關"不見"的電影，不見的時候也許我們才開始想念，才開始後悔沒有珍惜，…… 而最可怕的是，你往往不知道為什麼許多美好的事物會忽然之間就消失不見了………….

 在過去十年當中，我不斷的在演別人的電影，呈現他人的經歷，其實我很希望能把自己的經歷、想法、故事用自己的方式與其他人分享。

   Director's Statement

 My father gave up struggling and passed away from a long battle
of illness.  Two years after he passed away, my older brother's
child was born.  My mother suspected that the child was the
reincarnation of my father.  To take care of her first grandchild,
she retired early.  Because of this little angel, our family slowly
came out of the shadow of my father's death.

 One day, when my mother took the child to the park to play on
the slides, the kid fell and made a big bump on his forehead.  My
mother went pale from fear, saying that she was afraid my brother
would blame her.  Another time, she accidentally fed the child
expired milk; she was so afraid she couldn't sleep that night.  I
have never seen her so helpless and vulnerable before…… I often
wonder if my little nephew was ever to go missing in the park, what
would mother do?  And I also wonder if the little child was to be
born two years earlier.  My father, though in pain, might not have
given up life so easily.  Perhaps his illness might be cured and he
can take his grandson to the park to play……And I would not have
lost him so early……

 Last year, I saw a news report on television; in an alleyway of
some community, lots of old, stinking breakfast boxes have been found.
 After investigation, it turned out to be the work of an elementary
student.  Every morning, he would throw away the breakfast his
grandfather has prepared for him and go buy McDonalds.  After knowing
this, the grandfather was heartbroken……I decided to make a film
about "missing".  Only when it is missing do we miss what we had, do
we start to regret not cherishing what we had…… And what's most
frightening is you often don't know why so many beautiful things would
vanish all of a sudden……

 In the past ten years, I have continually acted in other people's
films, portraying the experiences of others.  But actually, I really
want to take my own experiences, my own thoughts, my own stories and
in my own way, share it with others.
